TGDaily reports that the next version of Adobe’s Photoshop application will take advantage of video card graphics processing units (GPUs) to provide a dramatic improvement in performance.
So, what can you do with general-purpose GPU (GPGPU) acceleration in Photoshop? We saw the presenter playing with a 2 GB, 442 megapixel image like it was a 5 megapixel image on an 8-core Skulltrail system. Changes made through image zoom and through a new rotate canvas tool were applied almost instantly. Another impressive feature was the import of a 3D model into Photoshop, adding text and paint on a 3D surface and having that surface directly rendered with the 3D models’ reflection map.
These features are expected to be introduced in Adobe’s next version of Creative Suite (CS4) which is expected in October of this year. GPU acceleration has been used in many aspects of Mac OS X’s Core Animation and Core Image.
Its about time
errr…
i think that, if we don’t have most powerfull graphic card we are not able to use photosop CS4 , am i wrong?
There are some software om the market that are using gpu power…
one is http://www.pixelmator.com
I’m not impressed , how fast coud be a gpu processor ? if you have a power mac with a 3.0Ghz intel xeon, coud you beat that with the gpu power? Maybe is usefull when working with 3d and nothing more… or maybe you need to upgrade to better graphic cards and spend something between 300 - to 800 Euros...Will’see…
Oh man, it’s time to use the GPU! I have a 600 € gfx-card and i can only use it for games!
I cannot wait for the new release of photoshop.

It’s about bloody time they figured out the graphics cards are of some use outside video games, as well.
