About me

Hi there,
My name is Alex Buga, I’m from Bucharest, Romania and I am a design-addict - in the good way. (Voices: “Helloooo Aleeeex !”)

I work as a Creative Director for MB Dragan, an interactive agency based in Bucharest and I can tell you: It’s the most fun place to work for - after Google wink

Experience

I have a six years background in webdesign and in the last three of them I had the chance to gain more experience and meet cool and smart people in great agencies like Kondiment, Firedive Interactive or Baritchi Advertising.

Have a great day,
Alex Buga

About this blog

So maybe you’re wondering what’s with all this stuff thrown in this page ? Well, the concept name of this version is “Alex Buga’s Livingroom”. And in my real livingroom you can find lots of things like my guitar – Squier American Stratocaster, my Native Instruments Maschine – depicted in the Music section, my Leica – because I’m a hobby photographer and I love to shoot film, an iPad for the Portfolio – although I don’t currently own one :D

I really love to inspire my designs from real life objects so that’s why it looks like a real room.
Some people don’t like the Autoscroll (there’s a button to disable it). Some people might not like animations (there’s a button for that too), some people might not like the roulette menu… etc.
But those people must understand this is a designer site, an experimental site. It’s not meant to be usable, viewable in Shiternet Explorer, etc, etc.

This site is meant as an experiment, and I love it. If you don’t I don’t care. If you do, and want to make a suggestion, I’ll love your feedback.

iChoice – An iPhone fan thoughts on Android

image

First of all, a little bit of history.

I was and still am an iPhone fan. I had a 2g iPhone wich now resides in my fiancee’s purse, then upgraded to a 3G and was very happy with it. Then I started to get pissed by various limitations. I know it sounds silly but I had to jailbreak the damn thing in order to put on a fuckin wallpaper.

So I’ve decided to try the HTC hero.
I loved the damned thing but Android needed a little catching up and the screen was too small for my fingers. So I sold it and returned to the 3g. But Android got me thinking with all those sweet features like replaceable sd card and battery, widgets, better home screen and notifications… etc, and I still kept an eye on Google.

Meanwhile

Android evolved real quick and it gained my attention again. So I sold the 3g and got an HTC Desire and then the Nexus one (don’t ask why, but Nexus is more awesome). And boy I don’t regret it. It’s packed with features, it’s open and to my surprise Android it looks very polished since my last encounter.

Although I still admire the iPhone for the beautiful desingn and polish of the iOS4, I love the Nexus. Like… wtf do you need folders on iOS4, if you only can put 12 apps in them. Like WTF ?

Anyway… As a designer I love the iOS look, feel and user experience, but the power user in me loves the pack of features on Android.

But what I don’t understand is why the hell I keep getting replies from Apple Mactards (there’s a huge diff between fanboys and mactards) like “Oh but they copy Apple, oh but that’s stolen from the iPhone”.

You know what? I don’t give a shit! They did it well! And you know what’s funny?

Take a car for example. It has 4 wheels, 4 doors and you drive it with a steering wheel. But I don’t hear Opel fans bitching at Toyota fans with stupid phrases like “Oh but Opel invented the steering wheel. Opel invented the injection engine.”

So going back to smartphones. they all have a touchscreen and a soft keyboard now. Ok, Apple did it first, but I’m sure everyone else had something up their sleeve waiting for one company to take the chance and release a product like that and see how the market responds.

At the end it’s a matter of choice for everyone. If you want to pay a shitload of money for a phone that works the way one person at Apple wants then be my guest. But competition won’t hurt anyone.

UPDATE: I played with the iPhone 4 recently, It’s pretty amazing and all, but I still don’t like the limitations.

So, in conclusion, I would like to say something to all those people: “Get on with your lives! It’s my phone, my choice, my money. So I decide what is best for me.”

PS: This post was written entirely on a toilet using the trusty Nexus One. So… I guess the keyboard is pretty good smile

Hi Davor,
I didn’t stated that the Desire is a shitty phone. It’s great, but Nexus is a little better at hardware design. Feels more ok in the hand. Plus, Android Stock is far more usable than Sense who just looks pretty.

I advise to all. It is not a shame to get from a pocket. Convenience in all situations and many other things.

So so true!  I used the G1 and it just quite didn’t beat the iPhone for me, but Android has picked up the game and I’ll never go back to an iPhone.  Steve Jobs is too nazi with his stuff, I love the open source freedom of the Android platform.  And the new Androids support Flash and AIR, making life easier for developers.

BTW, great site and great posts.  I really enjoy it.

Hi Alex,

Although I seem to be a bit late (well, 18 days) to the party, I just wanted to say I completely agree with everything said in the post. smile

Most of the people buy an iPhone for the fancy look (okay, I would, too, if I had a shitload of money and wanted to spend it) and the marketing Apple made over it.

I mean, WTF?! You buy a fancy phone, which costs twice as much as a similar Android-powered phone, and than cannot extend it. But noo, that’s not important - as long as you have an iPhone (sorry all iPhone users, but that’s how I see it).

Like Smashing mag recently said in one of their comics; iPhone to impress the girls, or Android to impress the geeks?

In the meantime I returned to an unlocked 3GS and although I’m still pissed by iTunes’ limitations I must say that not having to unlock and jailbreak is a big relief.

I did it for the apps I bought for it. And iOS4 is quite ok now that it has a lot of the features I wanted.

I wil never become a fanboy, even tho’ I have an iPhone now, and I like it. Still, you made a good choice. Use your android in good health.

Hello Alex… I think the first phone’s with touchscreen were the HTCs. Apple released the iPhone after a loooong time. Anyway ... Good choice with the Nexus One, I have the Desire and all I can say is that ... I prefer Nokia with buttons.

HAHA, I love this, and it’s so true. I don’t dislike Apple, I like Apple, but with an Android I can drop it in the toilet and get a BRAND NEW one for $75…. an iphone is $700…. I don’t have that kind of pocket, AND with all that Google is doing, it WILL surpass Apple in the next few years… i’m talking Google Tv, Android, tablets, etc. Google’s improving everything at such a fast pace, it’s amazing.

I thought there was a funny smell to this entire blog post :D

Anyway , iPhone, HTC with Android or whatever, I’m just happy more people stop using internet explorer .
